Requirements for the Major

Beginning fall 2007, the major in Political Science will require 32 hours, including POLS 130 (American Politics), POLS 132 (Global Politics), two 300 level courses, and POLS 485 (Junior/Senior Seminar). Students will fulfill the writing requirement by completing 485, the speaking requirement by completing the major, and the research requirement by completing 485 and a senior project. The senior project does not have to be completed in Political Science. A maximum of four internship hours can be counted toward the major.

What do these changes mean for current majors? You can stick with the catalog requirements for the major that existed when you began at Luther: 31 hours including: 130 (American Politics), one 200 level course, three 300 level courses (also satisfies the writing requirement). We plan to offer the first Junior-Senior Seminars soon and one of these could count as a 300 level course for those who stick with the old major.

The Political Science major is flexible, but it requires frequent consultation with the major adviser. Regular consultation insures that a major program meets that particular student’s needs. Students considering graduate study in political science, public policy or public administration should take at least one course in economics and one in statistics.
